Overview
Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory enzyme harvested from the core of the pineapple. When taken between meals, it helps support normal muscle recovery and inflammatory response. When taken with meals it acts as a potent digestive enzyme. Use caution when taking prior to surgery, or combining with anticoagulants (such as coumadin), as bromelain is a natural blood thinner.*

Bromelain (Metabolic Maintenance)

What is Bromelain?

Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory enzyme that can be harvested from the fruit, stem, or core of the pineapple. Bromelain is a 95% mixture of proteases including, but not limited to, phosphatase, glucosidase, peroxidase, cellulase, and escharase. Bromelain is well absorbed in human intestines without degradation and without losing its biological activity. There is also a lack of evidence for any major side effects, even after prolonged use of bromelain.

How does Bromelain Work?

When taken between meals, bromelain supports normal muscle recovery and inflammatory response. The anti-inflammatory effect of bromelain has been demonstrated and well-documented in a very wide range of biological conditions. There is mounting evidence to suggest bromelain acts by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, inducing the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, and reducing capillary permeability. Bromelain is often used postoperatively to promote healing and reduce postsurgical pain and swelling.

When taken with meals, bromelain acts as a potent digestive aid due to its widespread enzymatic activities. Evidence from some studies suggests that bromelain also counteracts some of the effects of certain intestinal pathogens like E. coli, whose enterotoxins cause diarrhea. This effect appears to be caused by an interaction between bromelain and intestinal secretory signaling pathways.

What are the Suggested Uses for Bromelain?

  • Supports healthy digestion with enzymatic activity.
  • Modulates inflammatory processes.
  • Promotes joint and muscle comfort with anti-inflammatory activities.
