Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin

Overview
Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin, taken with meals, supports normal digestion. Betaine hydrochloride may lower the pH (increase acidity) of stomach contents for more effective digestion of food and therefore increase the availability and absorption of otherwise bound nutrients. Pepsin is a protease that naturally aids in the breakdown of dietary protein into small peptides for absorption. Betaine hydrochloride should be avoided by those with hyperchlorhydria and stomach cancers. *

  • Optimizes stomach acidity*
  • Promotes proper protein breakdown*
  • May ease symptoms of suboptimal digestion*

Betaine HCl with Pepsin (Metabolic Maintenance)

Overview: Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin, taken with meals, supports normal digestion.

What is Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin? Our betaine hydrochloride (an acidic form of a modified amino acid) is prepared using isolates from sugar beets. It is typically taken with meals to support normal digestion by promoting optimal gastric acidity. Pepsin is a naturally-occurring, protein-digesting enzyme that may work synergistically to aid in the breakdown, and therefore more efficient absorption of nutrients from food.

How does Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin Work? Low stomach acidity, “hypochlorhydria”, can begin to occur more frequently as we age, but can also be caused by a variety of medical conditions, or use of antacids or other drugs to reduce stomach acid such as proton-pump inhibitors. Betaine hydrochloride can help to increase stomach acidity (lower pH), which is essential for the solubilization of food particles and the absorption of nutrients. Gastric juices break down proteins and starches prior to the action of intestinal enzymes.

Higher stomach pH (low acidity) can lead to nutritional deficiencies due to decreased absorption of iron, electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, zinc) and vitamins. Hypochloridria can also contribute to bacterial overgrowth, stomach discomfort, and reduced absorption of some drugs.

Pepsin is a proteolytic enzyme produced in the stomach of humans and other mammals. It is one of the chief digestive enzymes and needed to break proteins down into smaller peptides. Pepsinogen, pepsin’s proenzyme, is released by cells in the stomach wall, but cannot be converted to active pepsin unless sufficient levels of hydrochloric acid are present. Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin provides both concentrated pepsin and HCl to help activate pepsinogen.

What are the Suggested Uses for Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin?

  • Optimize stomach acidity - lower pH/increase acidity of stomach contents with HCl.
  • Promote proper protein breakdown - supplement pepsin and increase pepsinogen activation with HCl.
  • Improve digestion - and thereby ease symptoms of sub-optimal digestion.
