Mega Omega™ Extra Strength
Mega OmegaTM Extra Strength fish oil supplement is a rich source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids have been well studied and play a major role in human health. They provide protective effects for the immune, neurological, and cardiovascular systems and have been shown to promote healthy insulin and glucose metabolism. Our fish oils are concentrated, purified, and thoroughly tested by a third party lab to give the benefits of omega-3s without the risk of contaminants common in fish, such as mercury and arsenic. Mega OmegaTM Extra Strength offers 1000 mg of concentrated fish oil providing 450 mg of EPA and 340 mg of DHA per softgel.
- Promotes a healthy immune response
- Supports cardiovascular health
- Promotes healthy insulin and glucose metabolism
What is Mega Omega™ Extra Strength?
Mega Omega is a fish oil supplement that contains the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Polyunsaturated fatty acids are classified as n-3 (omega-3) or n-6 (omega-6) depending on the placement of the first double bond in the molecule. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are important structural components of cell membrane phospholipid bilayers, and EPA and DHA specifically, are most concentrated in synaptic membranes in the brain and in the retina. Typically, Americans don’t get enough omega-3s, and overdo the omega-6s; more than 80% of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids consumed in the United States consist of the omega-6 variety of fatty acids. Our cells are sensitive to changes in the ratio of omega-3s:omega-6s and imbalance can affect membrane fluidity, thickness, and strength, as well as influence how proteins embedded in the membrane move and function. There is evidence that omega-3 fatty acids also protect normal mitochondrial function and reduce excitotoxicity.
How does Mega Omega™ Extra Strength Work?
Fish oils provide protective effects over the immune, neurological, and cardiovascular systems and have been shown to promote healthy insulin and glucose metabolism.
The anti-inflammatory effect of dietary fish oil supplementation works from a number of angles. For one, it reduces the synthesis of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids also reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by leukocytes. Additionally, EPA and DHA are also the precursors for resolvins, which bring about a programmed resolution of the inflammatory process, and DHA is a precursor for the synthesis of protectins that have both anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activities.
DHA, specifically, is essential for the maintenance of normal brain function in adults. It is absorbed by the brain in preference to other fatty acids and the turnover of DHA in the brain is very fast. DHA in the diet has been shown to improve learning ability, whereas deficiencies of DHA are associated with deficits in learning. Decreases in DHA in the brain are associated with cognitive decline during aging.
The leading cause of death in developed nations is cardiovascular disease. Epidemiological and clinical evidence suggests that there is a significant inverse association between long-term intake of EPA and DHA and mortality associated with cardiovascular disease. Supporting this revelation is the strong correlation between fish consumption and reduced sudden death by myocardial infarction. Therefore, supplementation with fish oil likely supports cardiovascular health and could aid in the prevention against major events associated with cardiovascular disease, especially fatal myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death.
Studies have also been conducted to measure the effects of EPA and DHA on serum lipids, plasma, and platelet fatty acids, and fasting glucose concentrations. Both EPA and DHA were shown to decrease triacylglycerols, DHA increased HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), EPA increased fasting glucose concentrations. Along with demonstrating a role for fish oil supplementation in healthy metabolism, this improved lipid profile may explain the relationship between fish oil consumption and increased cardiovascular health.
What is the Suggested Use for Mega Omega™ Extra Strength?
- Promotes a healthy immune system and inflammatory response.
- Supports cardiovascular health. The reduction in major cardiac events is reported to be approximately 50% with at least 200 mg per day of DHA from fish. Fish oil reduces triglycerides in the blood, decreases thrombosis, and has been associated with a reduction in cardiac arrhythmias.
- Supports the eyes, brain, and cognition. EPA and DHA specifically, are most concentrated in synaptic membranes in the brain and in the retina. Decreases in DHA in the brain are associated with cognitive decline during aging.
- Promotes healthy insulin and glucose metabolism, and supports a balanced lipid profile.
