D, L-Phenylalanine

Overview
L-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that stimulates synthesis of catecholamines: dopamine, epinephrine (adrenaline), and norepinephrine. Adrenaline is converted into a brain chemical utilized to produce norepinephrine, which is responsible for promoting mental alertness and memory, while also elevating mood and suppressing appetite. D-Phenylalanine helps to naturally reduce pain signals in the nervous system. The combination of the two forms may help support both a normal mood and physical comfort. It should not be used with MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants, or by patients who have PKU, or hypertension. *

D, L-Phenylalanine (Metabolic Maintenance)

What is D, L-Phenylalanine?

L-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that is converted to tyrosine. It follows the catecholamine pathway and is a precursor to thyroid hormone. L-Phenylalanine helps support the normal production of mood-elevating chemicals in the brain such as dopamine and norepinephrine. D-Phenylalanine helps to naturally reduce pain signals in the nervous system. The combination of the two forms may help support normal mood and address physical discomforts. It should not be used with MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants, or by patients who have PKU, or hypertension.

Activated vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine HCl) has been added to enhance amino acid metabolism.

How does D, L-Phenylalanine Work?

Insufficient levels or activity of neurotransmitters is a central element to the model of general depression. The synthesis of most neurotransmitters happens within the brain, and for some neurotransmitters, the amount of biochemical precursors present from the diet can influence their rate of synthesis As phenylalanine is a precursor for neurotransmitter production, it can support the maintenance of a balanced mood.

Natural forms of phenylalanine are associated with a variety of brain functions. One of those pathways leads to pain relief systems throughout the body. When signals of pain from a particular sector of the body reach the brain, hormones are released and directed to the given point of trauma. The anesthetic power of this endorphin system, involving products of phenylalanine, extends into the realm of chronic pain as well. D, L-Phenylalanine seems to modulate the signals for chronic pain, without interfering with or masking the triggering system in the brain for acute, short-term pain.

This effect of D, L-Phenylalanine may be mediated, at least in part, by up-regulation of the ‘endogenous analgesia system’ (EAS). When stimulated by chronic pain, the EAS suppresses activation of second-order pain-receptive neurons, thereby alleviating some pain.

Furthermore, studies have shown that D, L-Phenylalanine binds to glutamate AMPA receptors, which improve the communication between synapses in the brain. This has the effect of increasing memory speed and learning ability, promoting increased mental energy and focus.
